Statement Of The Thabo Mbeki Foundation On The Passing Of Joost Van Der Westhuizen

The Thabo Mbeki Foundation wishes to convey its deep condolences to the family of former Springbok scrum-half and Captain, Joost van der Westhuizen, who passed away yesterday.

Westhuizen was an outstanding rugby player and sports personality who kept millions of South Africans entertained and thrilled by his precision, strategic and tactical brilliance on the pitch.

In addition and most important, Joost was a highly committed South African who was prepared to contribute the sweat of his brow to make South Africa a country that truly belongs to all who live in it, black and white.

Joost’s untimely passing therefore represents a tragic loss not only to his family and friends, but also the world of rugby and South Africa as a whole.

In our humble opinion, our country should, as we mourn the departure of this outstanding son of our motherland, also discuss what all of us should do the better to make ours the non-racial spatial space to whose creation Joost van der Westhuizen was committed.

Our thoughts and prayers go to his family, friends, the rugby and general sporting community.
