It was with great sadness that we heard the news that our very dear leader and friend, Sir Ketumile Masire, former President of the Republic of Botswana, passed away last night, June 22.
We will always remember Sir Ketumile as an outstanding African leader and patriot who played a critical and courageous role in the struggle for the liberation of our country from the shackles of the apartheid system.
Further, Sir Ketumile belonged among that eminent cohort of African leaders who served the peoples of Botswana and the rest of Africa with great honesty, integrity and humility, always informed by an unwavering commitment to discharge their responsibilities without any expectation of personal gain.
We will greatly miss his wisdom, his guiding hand and his friendship as we continue to do our best to respond to the many challenges our country and Continent face.
We convey our heartfelt condolences to the Masire family, as well as to H.E. President Seretse Khama Ian Khama, the Government and sister people of Botswana who, under the leadership of President Masire, sacrificed many lives during the years of struggle against apartheid.
With the passing of Sir Ketumile Masire we have lost a humble giant whose exemplary life has made all of us proudly African!
May he rest in eternal peace!
