April 28, 2018.
Yesterday, 27 April, 2018, the President of the Republic of Korea, Moon Jae-in, and Kim Jong Un, Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea signed a historic document entitled the “Panmunjom Declaration for Peace, Prosperity and Unification of the Korean Peninsula”.
Our Foundation joins the many others throughout the world who have congratulated these leaders of the Korean people for taking a major step forward towards ending a long unresolved remnant of the Cold War.
In this context we welcome the aspirations of the Korean people for peace, prosperity and unity, thus to end the negative consequences imposed on them by the very costly 1950 – 1953 Korean War.
The realisation of these aspirations by the Korean people would also make an important contribution to world peace as the situation in the Korean Peninsula would no longer exist which has been considered a threat to international peace and security.
This year is the 65th anniversary of “The Korean War Armistice Agreement”, which was signed on 27 July, 1953.
As that Agreement says, it was negotiated and signed “in the interest of stopping the Korean conflict, with its great toil of suffering and bloodshed on both sides, and with the objective of establishing an armistice which will insure a complete cessation of hostilities and of all acts of armed force in Korea until a final peaceful settlement is achieved…”
The 27 April, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration opens the way precisely to the conclusion, 65 years after the end of the Korean War, of this “final peaceful settlement”!
We therefore call on all those concerned to do everything necessary to achieve this outcome.
We also convey our best wishes to the Korean people for success as they work together to pursue the noble objectives contained in the Panmunjom Declaration.
