The Thabo Mbeki Foundation (TMF) is delighted to announce that it will be launching the following two books Saturday, June 16 2018 at Turffontein Race Course at Turffontein Hall at 9am.
- Soweto Uprisings: New Perspectives, Commemorations and Memorialisation.
- Building Blocks Towards An African Century: Essays in Honour of Thabo Mbeki.
In marking the 42nd Anniversary of the 1976 Student Uprising, the South African Democracy Education Trust (SADET), a programme of the Thabo Mbeki Foundation overseen jointly with UNISA, has produced Volume 7 of the South African Road to Democracy project.
This latest contribution to The Road to Democracy Series deftly analyses commemorations and memorialisations of the 1976 uprisings in Soweto. Voices of authorities, police and veterans of the struggle are shared through collective memories, eyewitness accounts, and oral history testimonies. This volume, rooted as it is in primary evidence and archival material, rather than in abstract theories, offers readers rare insights from the voices and sometimes piecemeal memories of the students, parents and authorities who lived through those turbulent and momentous days.
The second book is a compendium of essays by academics from around the African continent. This book conducts, among others, a thorough examination of Thabo Mbeki’s contribution to intellectual engagement about Africa’s past, present and future. The question of “Who is an African” is also thoroughly debated and various permutations are offered as to whether the question should be answered as a matter of colour or identity on the one hand or a matter of ideas, vision and commitment to Africa’s agenda, on the other.
