Statement of the Thabo Mbeki Foundation on the Passing of Professor Samir Amin.

13 August 2018.

The Thabo Mbeki Foundation joins the people of Africa and the World in mourning the passing of Pan Africanist scholar, activist, and co-founder and Director of the Third World Forum, Professor Samir Amin. Professor Amin passed away on Sunday, August 12, 2018.

Professor Amin was without a doubt one of the foremost theoreticians of the 20th Century. Born in Egypt in 1931, he committed his intellectual life to assist Africa and the world in finding and developing fairer and just forms of human organisation.

A kindred sapient mind once noted, “The philosophers have only interpreted the world in various ways; the point, however, is to change it”. Through his scholarship, rooted in the realities of the African working-class, Professor Amin not only exposed the inherent inhumanity of the capitalist system, he was an advocate for inclusive social systems to better the human condition.

He remains a fitting role model for the progressive intelligentsia Africa so desperately needs to achieve its renaissance.

As Professor Amin joins the galaxy of stars that will for eternity light up our African skies, those of us who enjoy the gift of liberty, are urged to pledge our unwavering commitment, sparing neither courage nor strength, to realise the cause to which he and many like him dedicated their lives and intellects.

We would like to extend our sincere and deepest condolences to the Amin family, his colleagues, and friends.

May his soul rest in eternal peace!
