The Thabo Mbeki Foundation wishes to convey its congratulations to the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) on its successful 13th National Congress.
More specifically, we congratulate the Federation’s affiliates for electing the first ever woman President, Comrade Zingiswa Losi. We wish her and the newly elected leadership collective success in leading this important voice and shield of working people.
In the 32 years of its existence, COSATU has been an important force for progressive change. It has shaped both the direction of the struggle for liberation and the post-1994 democratic order and still has a vital role to play in the realisation of such important national tasks as the:
(i) representation of workers’ interests in the shop floor and the wider social and political realms;
(ii) promotion of a people-centred society founded on the values of human solidarity;
(iii) active support for and as an active member of the international solidarity movement, and;
(iv) search for practical solutions to our country’s triple challenge of poverty, inequality and unemployment.
In this context, we recall the historic slogan that inspired and sustained the founders and successive generations of members and leaders of COSATU: “One Country, One Federation”. Accordingly, we call on the Federation’s newly elected leadership to take practical measures to promote workers’ unity within the Federation and the trade union movement as a whole.
The challenges facing our society and the working class in particular require a focused and united trade union movement which fully appreciates and internalises the aphorism of the ancient Greeks: “United we Stand, Divided we Fall!”
