Statement of the Thabo Mbeki Foundation on the passing of Mr Richard John Pelwana Maponya

January 06, 2020

The Thabo Mbeki Foundation joins South Africans in mourning the passing of the Esteemed Member of the Order of the Baobab in Silver, Mr Richard Maponya after a short illness.

Mr Maponya was an exemplary and outstanding business person and a tireless activist for transformed ownership and participation of the formerly oppressed in the South African economy. His life and work are worthy of emulation by current and future generations.

On the occasion of the conferment of National Orders, in 2007, the Presidency said Mr Maponya “rose from the dust-choked, arid and impoverished rural areas of Limpopo to become one of the most respected and respectable self-made businesspeople in South Africa. Despite the humiliation of apartheid, the deliberate deprivations and racial ceilings and laws forbidding entrepreneurial spirit among black people, he proved a visionary with a dream that refused to die.” http://www.thepresidency.gov.za/…/richard-john-pelwana-mapo…

The Patron of the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, President Thabo Mbeki, its Board and Staff convey our deepest condolences to the Maponya family and his colleagues in the business fraternity.

May his soul rest in eternal peace!
