Tribute to iSanusi, Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa!

The Thabo Mbeki Foundation (TMF) joins South Africans in mourning the passing of the great iSanusi, Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa after a long illness.

Credo Mutwa occupied a unique place in the trenches of the struggle for self-determination and the restoration of our heritage as Africans. Thus, he became an inspired protector and defender of indigenous knowledge systems and traditions.

He was blessed with a rare gift to see and interpret beyond the world of material reality. A gift he selflessly and tirelessly put to service for all humanity. His gift afforded him citizenship of the world where his wisdom was not limited by the challenges which preoccupy our mundane lives.

As humanity once against battles to find light in one of its darkest hours, we humbly appeal to iSanusi Mutwa, as he now occupies the ranks of our ancestors, to intercede for us as we pull ourselves from the brink of an abyss.

We would also like to commend our government for recognising iSanusi Credo Mutwa in its efforts to preserve his work as part of our common heritage. Accordingly, we appeal to all South Africans to support the work of the Credo Mutwa Foundation and the Reference Group for the Promotion and Protection of the Credo Mutwa Legacy which is led by Prof. Mongane Serote.

Our Patron, President Thabo Mbeki, the Board and the staff of the TM Foundation, would like to convey our deepest condolences to the Mutwa family.

May iSanusi Credo Mutwa’s soul rest in peace!
